Life began simply for the young Lucius. He was born to a poor village nestled in the mountains in Ilsabard. The denizens were oblivious to the greater world around them, save for the few neighboring villages they traded with regularly. Anything they lacked would be provided by a particular Eikon that the villagers prayed to for assistance. His family cared for him and he was happy.[break][break]

The boy’s simple life came to an abrupt end one morning when the low whirr of magitek engines could be heard in the distance. He emerged from his hovel and witnessed the adults of the village frantically praying to their Eikon’s altar and shoveling mounds of aether crystals before it, but for whatever reason, no help came. Before long, the jet black uniforms of the imperial legions could be seen emerging from between the trees.[break][break]

Lucius fell to his back in fear as the soldiers rushed into the village center, throwing any surrendering to the ground and killing any not. Any that were still praying at the altar were shot without hesitation. The young boy rose to his feet again with tears welling in his eyes, determined to find his parents amidst the chaos. However, before he could find them, he was found by a single legionary.[break][break]

The soldier reached down for Lucius as he tumbled to his back yet again, but before he could be taken, his parents leaped at the man, desperate to save their only son. Their noble intentions earned them only a beating and a prompt execution. Lucius was sobbing and screaming as he and the other children of the village were carried to the cold dark metal sarcophagus that would eventually transport them to the empire itself.[break][break]

Lucius was alone, scared, and confused for the first time in his life. He was put into the care of a government agency until he was found a Garlean family willing to adopt him. It took some adjusting, but Lucius’ new parents grew to love him equally to their true kin and he loved them in return. His life within the Empire was so much more rich than before. The food was varied and delicious, there were so many places to visit and things to do, and he had made friends who would truly last a lifetime. Every day, week, and month that passed allowed him to forget his old life and his pain more and more.[break][break]

His adopted parents encouraged him to join the military as soon as he was of age so that he could work his way towards becoming a full citizen of Garlemald with all of the associated rights, which he excitedly agreed to. It was throughout his tenure as a legionary and eventually a centurion that Lucius displayed a natural affinity for tactics, strategy, and leadership. This high degree of competence along with his developed unwavering dedication to the ideals of the empire allowed him to ascend the ranks quickly. It was now, decades later, that he stood at the culmination of his dreams. Not only had he long earned his Garlean citizenship, but he was able to speak his name with the highest honor of “Van” as the newest Legatus of the Legion.
